ca. 1790 · Derbyshire spar "Blue John", gilt bronze; Sienna marble · European Sculpture and Decorative Arts

Blue John, also known as Derbyshire Spar, is a rare semi-precious mineral, which can be found only in Britain, primarily in Derbyshire. This neo-classical urn and columns are highly evocative of eighteenth-century British taste for hardstones fashioned into classical forms.
