Tobacco, first imported to Europe from the New World in the late 16th century, was originally praised for its medicinal properties. It soon became a recreational drug, and smoking a widespread pastime. Special containers with a tight fitting lid were created to keep the snuff (shredded tobacco leaves) fresh. Created of gold, enamel, porcelain or hard-stones, these luxury objects were frequently presented as gifts.
