British designer Christopher Dresser’s fascination with foreign cultures is evident in the designs he produced for Linthrope Art Pottery. John Harrison, owner of the Sun Brick Works, began Linthorpe in 1879 as a charitable endeavor intended to provide jobs for the vast number of unemployed in the impoverished region of North Yorkshire. Dresser’s interest in Japanese design appears in many of models and unique glazes he developed for Linthorpe, The honey-colored glaze on this large vase, deliberately poured in uneven layers, would have reminded contemporary viewers of Japanese ceramics. Apparently, Linthorpe was also popular among Japanese officers visiting England. Sailing on the Tees River in North England to deliver cargo, they purchased the affordable wares and took them back to Japan.
