Raffaëlli took up scenes of central Paris as his subject when he moved into the city in the 1890s. Here he shows the bustling Place de la Madeleine in late autumn or early winter. The neoclassical façade of the Madeleine Church is visible through the bare branches and brown leaves of the trees. The artist’s selective application of color in this print animates the pedestrians, carriages, and omnibuses making their way through the busy Parisian square.
