The Old Lady's Garden
Jean-François Raffaëlli|Bessie Potter Vonnoh
1894 · Color etching and drypoint with monotype; third state of three · Drawings and Prints

In this color etching made from five plates, Raffaëlli portrays an elderly woman standing on her balcony, momentarily distracted from her task of watering the plants. The artist dedicated this print to Bessie O. Potter, later Bessie Potter Vonnoh, an American sculptor, whom he met in Chicago in April 1895. Raffaëlli’s work was well received in the United States and Potter played an important role in placing his work in American collections.
