This silk-satin knotted belt was shown by the couturier Mainbocher as part of his winter collection of 1942, and attests to the creative problem solving that occurred in fashion during a period of wartime restriction. The belt was among a group of accessories presented as interchangeable components that were intended to be paired with his basic black "metamorphosis" dresses. These practical, yet sophisticated, ensembles allowed for American women to alter a group of wardrobe staples to suit a variety of different occasions. Like all of Mainbocher’s work, the belt is beautifully constructed.
