George Schreyer Sr. was an important member of the first generation of Pennsylvania gunsmiths who created a uniquely American style of decorated firearms. This rifle beautifully displays some of the major strengths of Schreyer's work, notably the quality, originality, and extent of the relief-carved decoration on its curly maple stock and the fine form and engraving of its brass mounts. Schreyer was a prime proponent of the York School, which influenced the style of generations of gunsmiths in neighborging Pennsylvania counties as well as parts of Maryland and Virginia.
