Josef Hoffmann

Best known for founding both the Vienna Secession and the Wiener Werkstätte, Josef Hoffmann was one of the most important figures in twentieth century modern design. This brooch synthesizes several elements of Hoffmann's style. Its somewhat attentuated square form and strict geometric pattern are hallmarks of early Werkstätte designs of both Hoffmann and Kolomon Moser. The stripe pattern was also used by Hoffmann in his designs for leather goods, wall coverings, fabrics, and posters.
