Scott Crolla was known for his use of chintz fabrics brought together in a dandiacal, ‘ragpicker’ silhouette typical of the New Romantics movement. The textiles would often seem to be raided from historical period rooms, and performed a pastiche of Englishness through their use of floral patterns. The acidic colors such as green and yellow would invoke the joy and optimism of the flower power era of the 1960s, and stood in contrast with the harsher aesthetic of the punk movement that had come just before in the late 1970s. The shiny surface of the jacket attests to its postmodern sensibility, wherein surface ornament in art and architecture became prevalent again. This jacket was custom-made for Mike Lindup, singer and musician of British band Level 42, and fabrics were sourced from a British ecclesiastical textiles manufacturer.
