Li Jin

Li Jin is famed for his raucous images of food and flesh, in which people from all walks of life—and seemingly different times and places—come together in various states of undress over tables laden with treats. A profusion of flowers, meat, fish, and vegetables fills one side of this composition, along with a bottle of Jack Daniel’s whiskey. Most of the male figures are variations of Li’s self-portrait, wearing costumes that range from a pink pig suit to the robe of an ancient Chinese scholar, and expressions that vary from drowsy drunkenness to beatific calm. Li’s whimsical tableaux offer an updated take on the “elegant gathering” for our own time.
