While studying art and architecture as a pensionnaire of the French Academy in Rome, Normand met the photographer Maxime Du Camp and the writer Gustave Flaubert just after the pair returned from documenting their travels in Egypt. Inspired by Du Camp, the architect Normand took up the calotype photographic process and began integrating his photographs into his drawings for building projects. He printed this view of the Temple of Jupiter in the Forum of Pompeii on blue paper, imparting the photograph with the effect of a watercolor study. He continued to print his Italian negatives throughout his life and eventually became the vice president of the French Photographic Society.
