Landscapes with architectural ruins feature prominently on maiolica dishes made in Pavia, a city in the Lombardy region of Italy, during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century. The two figures painted in front of the arch resemble spectators at a performance, drawing attention to the hilltop city in the distance, as well as the ingenuity of the dish’s painter.
