This spring/summer 1991 Maison Martin Margiela jacket was constructed out of repurposed denim trousers which were deconstructed and laid flat. Its many iterations in the years that followed always followed the same principle. It was worn on the catwalk with a "waiter's apron" with permanent pleats. The jacket became a staple design of the house, questioning fashion's adages regarding newness, beauty and preciosity.
