Toyin Ojih Odutola

Odutola has developed a complex and fascinating practice that explores the mutability of identities and the longevities of tradition across oceans and time. Born in Nigeria and raised in Huntsville, Alabama, her practice is deeply informed by her experience as an African immigrant in the American South. Beginning her career with works in richly toned charcoal on paper that examined skin color as a marker and metaphor, she has in recent years developed a fantastical and compelling narrative through her works that tells the story of two make-believe, aristocratic Nigerian dynasties whose intertwined lives and leisure time activities form the basis for an ongoing series of portraits that capture family members at rest.
