The Hall of Antiquities at Charlottenborg Palace, Copenhagen
Adam August Müller
1830 · Oil on canvas · European Paintings

A young watchman’s casual lack of self-awareness contrasts with the stiff formality of plaster casts made from Greek and Roman sculptures. These galleries in Charlottenborg Palace, seat of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Art, provided students like Müller with models from antiquity as the basis for learning to draw. On the tablet in the foreground is a faint rendering of the nearby statue of the standing Isis, a sign of the artist’s presence.
