Vignon was one of the more spirited and original French printmakers of the seventeenth century. He trained in Rome and upon his return was patronized by Louis XIII and the cardinal Richelieu. In a style influenced by Rembrandt and the Lorraine school, he created tactile etchings capturing the dramatic contrasts of light and dark that also characterized his paintings. This print records a lost altarpiece Vignon painted for Notre Dame Cathedral in 1638. Typical of his manner is its turbulent composition, expressive line, and strong contrasts of light and dark.
