The form of the tankard is European in origin, and this example must have been intended for export. The style of the enamel decoration, however, is commonly found on Chinese porcelain of the early eighteenth century produced both for the domestic market and for export. The silver mounts that attach the cover to the body of the tankard bear the mark of a French silversmith and are dated for the years 1726–1732.
