This color lithograph, known as 'The Charge of the Four Hundred', depicts a lane in a park (Central Park?) with people of the upper classes of Gilded Age New York coming and going in carriages and on horseback. The illustration was based on a drawing by the artist Thure de Thulstrup, who was born in Sweden, but moved to the United States after his military career. He became an illustrator for many of the popular illustrated weekly’s and newspapers such as Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper and Harper’s. He specialized in military scenes and scenes of every-day life in and around New York. The Museum has a large group of his sketches and drawings, and a preparatory drawing for this print is present in the collection.
