Vogeler, a painter, architect, and designer joined the artists’ colony of Worpswede in 1894 and purchased a cottage there, which he called The Barkenhoff, after the birch trees he planted around it. The house became a cultural center for the colony and appears in a number of the prints in this portfolio dedicated to spring. Each of the square plates, printed in greenish black ink, depicts flora and fauna as well as scenes of rural life during springtime. Vogeler conceived the album in its entirety including the cover, lettering, and overall layout; it is an exquisite example of Jugenstil or art nouveau book design.
