Robert Frank’s view of a Chinese cemetery haunted by coastal fog in San Francisco is another brilliant example of his idiosyncratic work from The Americans (1958). The essential controlled chaos in the photograph recalls the artist’s late-in-life comment on his working methods: "I like a certain disorder; then I can find something in it. I’m like the crows who pick food out of the garbage. They get the good pieces."
