In Miss America, Jones blurs the boundary between art and consumer products, seamlessly integrating a postcard of a cowgirl within a desert scene imagined by the artist, as indicated by the painterly quality of the cacti at the top of the composition. Additional images of the postcard, placed below and set askew against a white background, suggest an object cascading downward and into the viewer’s space. At bottom right is the back of the postcard, featuring the artist’s signature. In keeping with the spirit of Pop, the print elevates to the status of art both the postcard—a mass-produced product—and offset lithography, a process once reserved for the manufacture of such products.
