Thomas Chippendale’s influential book of furniture designs, “The Gentleman and Cabinetmaker’s Director” (London, 1754), tapped into the growing interest in Chinese ornament in England and the colonies. More than one hundred years later, Chippendale’s furniture forms again saw a resurgence in popularity, as exemplified by this Tiffany Studios bench. The right angles, fretwork pattern on the legs, and lattice shaped brackets between the legs and seat rail draw from Chippendale’s designs. Like his eighteenth-century counterpart, Tiffany also sought inspiration in the arts of Asia, making this table desirable not only for its evocation of the colonial era but also traditional Chinese art.
