Although difficult to date with certainty, this view of the Halle des Capucins (now the metro and tramway station, Gare de Noailles, in Marseille) was likely made within several years of the building’s completion in 1837 by the city’s architect, Frédéric Chassériau. The picture shows the remnants of the city’s bustling nineteenth-century flower market, held at the feet of Joseph Chinard’s La Paix (1810), a colossal figure personifying peace. The statue was conserved and cleaned in 2018 as part of a revitalization project of the area, which is still famous for its produce and food stands.
