Rashid Choudhury

Rashid Choudhury was a pioneer of the modern art movement in Bangladesh. He trained at Dacca Art College, and then in Spain and France, where he began to work in tapestry. Choudhury returned to Bangladesh in 1964 to become the first full-time instructor of Fine Arts at Chittagong University. The artist’s visual language balances local and regional references with a more formal modernist aesthetic. His pieces convey a deeply visceral, rhythmic sensation that resonates with the work of Henri Matisse, but which developed from traditional imagery, in particular representations of female deities. His numerous public commissions include the tapestries in the Louis Kahn-designed Parliament building in Dhaka.
