Our Lady of Cocharcas
Unknown
1759 · Oil and gold on canvas · The American Wing

The miraculous statue of Our Lady of Cocharcas is shown on a processional altar in the midst of a rugged Andean landscape populated by pilgrims and other devotees. The distorted scale of the cult image in relation to the diminutive figures who travel the steep roads that flank it, underscores the sacredness of both the image and the remote place it graces and protects. The painting appears to depict the romería, or pilgrimage procession, held in connection with the annual feast of the Virgin of Cocharcas (September 8th).
