五代伊藤赤水作 無名異練上鉢|Large bowl with stripes — Itō Sekisui V

The stripes on this bowl were created by neriage, a method of kneading different shades of clay into a slab, cutting it to reveal a marbleized pattern, and piecing together the slices. Itō is a fifth-generation ceramist from Sado Island who works with an ocher clay called mumyōi, a by-product of local gold mines. His works combine contemporary taste with traditional forms and techniques; in 2003 he was designated a Living National Treasure.
