Lyubov Popova

Popova was one of the first female pioneers of the particularly Russian development of Cubo-Futurism, a fusion of the two equal influences from France and Italy, countries she visited. Through a synthesis of styles, she approached what she called painterly architectonics. Later, she joined the Suprematism group with Malevich, Ekster, Puni, and others. The creation of this new kind of painting was part of the revolutionary urge of the Russian avant-garde to remake the world. This decorative small watercolor is the first work by Popova to enter The Met’s collection.
