Bertold Löffler

This large pattern design for wallpaper (or possibly textile) was made by Bertold Löffler, who was a prominent member and teacher within the Wiener Werkstätte. Löffler was an all-round designer, and also taught embroidery design as well as general classes in pattern design. This large drawing shows a pattern of abstract tree branches with tulips (U-shapes) and berries (circles), and stands in strong contrast to some of Löffler finer designs for posters, postcards and decorative art objects. It thus illustrates the variation in aesthetics that were characteristic for various different disciplines within the Wiener Werkstätte production.
