Sugar bowl (Model 247)
Elkington & Co.|Christopher Dresser
ca. 1885 · Silver-plated nickel · European Sculpture and Decorative Arts

Christopher Dresser produced radically innovative designs for production in a wide range of media including silver, glass, brass, wood, wallpaper, ceramics and even cast iron. His inspiration was drawn from sources as disparate as pre-Columbian ceramics, ancient Roman glass and Japanese ceramics. A few of his designs, however, such as this sugar bowl, are strikingly modern, and do not seem to quote earlier precedents.
