Marie Zimmermann

The work of Marie Zimmermann was admired and celebrated during her lifetime, and it continues to attract attention today. Although trained in painting and sculpting, she was primarily a metalworker, who liked to say that she made "everything from tiaras to tombstones." This bowl and cover are constructed largely of gilt silver sheet, which provides a striking backdrop for some of Zimmermann’s prized "found" objects—in this case two polished stones and a carved spherical red bead attached to the center of the cover. Zimmermann favored the model of incorporating exotic little objets into her designs, almost as the focus of the piece.
