Victor David Brenner

Educated in gem and seal engraving by his father in Lithuania, Brenner immigrated to the United States in 1890. After further training at the Cooper Union in New York and the Académie Julian in Paris, Brenner attained recognition as a sculptor. He is best-known for his presidential portraits, including the Lincoln cent (1909) and this bas-relief bust of George Washington, which is likely after Joseph Wright’s 1790 engraving of the president in profile. Images of Washington in various media enjoyed great popularity in American homes throughout the nineteenth century.
