Vauxhall

The demand for porcelain in England in the mid-eighteenth century encouraged the founding of numerous porcelain factories, though only some of these flourished. A small enterprise was established in the early 1750s in Vauxhall, just to the southwest of London. Although the factory survived only ten years or so, it produced both decorative objects and wares of good quality, many of which were decorated in cobalt blue, as on this vase. The distinctive form of the vase copies that of a model produced at the Sèvres factory in France, though the decoration of the Vauxhall example is entirely English in spirit.
