In the series River, Lynch explores the continuous interchange between past and present in the lifecycles of natural and built environments. Lynch focuses her large-format camera on the waterway between Canal and 65th Streets on the west side of Manhattan, part of the Hudson estuary that stretches more than 300 miles through New York State. Dilapidated piers and piles, signs of a once robust shipping industry, are juxtaposed against new construction and the New Jersey skyline. Untitled 3 depicts one of the ventilation towers of the Holland Tunnel, which was completed in 1927 and connects Manhattan and Jersey City. Located at Pier 34 near Spring Street, the Manhattan site is also home to artist Ron Baron’s 1999 installation, Birds. Colorful Nova Scotia lobster buoys, now faded, adorn the antique piles and serve as maritime totems—witnesses to the cultural and evolutionary transformations signaled by the river’s flow.
