Tsukioka Kōgyo

In the Noh play Takasago, a traveler meets an old man and an old woman raking and sweeping around an ancient pine; only later are they revealed as divine beings. Their apparent devotion to each other accounts for the traditional reference to a passage from the play during wedding festivities in Japan. The couple is depicted here with rake and broom; both the man and the woman wear mizugoromo similar to the garment displayed in this case.
