Brockhurst's etching of a dejected woman with long loose hair standing by a pool relates to a tempera painting (Wiggin Collection, Boston Public Library). He made the latter while living in Ireland between 1915 and 1918 and took as his subject, a local girl who committed suicide after being cast out by her village, using a background that conveys admiration for Italian fifteenth-century painting. The artist published a series of masterful etchings between 1920 and 1933 (plus one addition in 1942), most of which are portraits. Thematic subjects such as "Seule" (Alone) are rare.
