The title identifies the sitter as a woman of mixed European and African parentage, either from the Caribbean or Louisiana. In this final state, the face, upper body and cascading hair are highly finished, but the left hand and long cuffs left undeveloped. The artist showed a related painting at the Royal Academy and Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in 1930 (also see 56.58 for a painting in the Museum's collection of the same sitter).
