Panel of four tiles, framed — Campbell Brick & Tile Co.|Christopher Dresser

These tiles are decorated with inlaid colored clays in a technique that is known as encaustic. Tiles of this type were highly popular in nineteenth-century Britain, and were used extensively in Gothic Revival churches as well as domestic interiors. The simple patterns executed in two or more colored clays created a highly decorative effect with an economy of means.
