Girault’s dramatic view contrasts the glistening, icebound fountain at the place du Château d’Eau with the dark silhouette of the surrounding city. The fountain (near the site of Louis Daguerre’s Diorama and studio) was replaced and moved in 1867 to La Villette, the city’s new cattle market. Girault photographed fountains throughout his travels, perhaps as studies for the water feature he constructed at his villa.
