Infant and Flautist, Haji Ali, Mumbai — Ketaki Sheth

Sheth began taking pictures on the streets of Mumbai in the 1980s, under the guidance of the prominent Indian photographer Raghubir Singh. A Mumbai native, she has an uncanny ability to discern order amidst the chaos and clutter of the city's streets. Like the American photographer Helen Levitt, Sheth captures the impish exuberance of children with great clarity and sensitivity. Here, a boy sleeps on a parapet by the sea, serenaded by a flute player reclining nearby, evoking the mythic iconography of the young Krishna.
