Morino Hiroaki (also known as Morino Hiroaki Taimei)

Morino hand-built this large rectangular vase with a matte black surface and L-shaped red patterns resembling traditional Japanese door keys. The son of a Kyoto potter, the artist received conservative early training in porcelain decoration with Tomimoto Kenkichi in Kyoto. Morino was an instructor at the University of Chicago in the 1960s, where he was stimulated by the energy of Pop Art and Abstract Expressionism. Much of his work follows the tenets of ceramic sculpture established in the late 1940s by the avant-garde group Sōdeisha.
