Although born in Seto, one of the first ceramic centers in Japan, Kuriki developed an interest in ceramic sculpture in the 1960s while studying at the Kyoto City University of Arts with Kondō Yūzō (1902–1985, Living National Treasure) and Tomimoto Kenkichi (1886–1963, Living National Treasure), giants of the porcelain tradition. In his work he meticulously applied each line using a paper stencil to fit precisely within the contours of the shape. Here, decoration and form fuse into a single pattern of interweaving bands, emphasizing the potter’s control against the traditional belief that the best effects are created by uncontrolled kiln events.
