Flowerpot and stand
James Pottery
1824 · Earthenware; Redware with sgraffito decoration · The American Wing

An exceptional example of sgraffito hollowware, this flowerpot was made for Tacy Lewis of Newtown, Pennsylvania. She would have been thirty-one years old in 1824, and the presentation piece was presumably made in honor of a birth or wedding. The elaborate ruffled border on both the pot and the stand is characteristic of the Chester County region.
