Textile Design with Undulating Garlands of Stylized Flowers and Leaves Separated by Undulating Zig-Zagging Strips of Pearls — Anonymous, Alsatian, 19th century

Rectangular sheet of paper with a textile design from a group, dated 1840, made in Mulhouse, Alsace, which was an important nineteenth-century center for textile production in the Haut-Rhin region of France. The design is made up of undulating garlands of stylized flowers and leaves of dark reddish-brown color with dots of light tan color separated by undulating strips of zig-zagging pearls over a light tan ground. The pistils of the flowers are colores with orange and purple and have red outlines; the pearls are colored with white. In the upper half of the design, the garlands of flowers and leaves have offsetting branches rendered with stipples of dark reddish-brown color and the background is decorated with stipples of the same color.
