1840 · Gouache · Drawings and Prints

Rectangular sheet of paper with a textile design from a group, dated 1840, made in Mulhouse, Alsace, which was an important nineteenth-century center for textile production in the Haut-Rhin region of France. The design is made of alternating rows of stylized leaves of light tan color, outlined with dark red, decorated with a rosette of five petals and two pearls of white color. In the background, a pattern of alternating overlapping scales, rendered with dark brown stipples, stands out over a light tan base.
