Textile Design with a Checked Pattern of Intersecting Honeycomb Lines and Vertical Stripes of Pearls

Rectangular sheet of paper with a textile design from a group, dated 1840, made in Mulhouse, Alsace, which was an important nineteenth-century center for textile production in the Haut-Rhin region of France. The design is made up of checked background of intersecting vertical and horizontal honeycomb stripes of light tan color over a dark reddish-brown base, and zig-zagging stripes of pearls running over the vertical honeycomb stripes. The pearls are of white color and outlined with black. Star-like figures of light tan color with stipples of dark reddish-brown color stand out in the squares forming between the honeycomb stripes.
