The Meissen factory was the first in Europe to master the technology to produce porcelain similar to that made in China. The factory’s interest in Chinese porcelain extended to the palette of blue and white, which was inextricably linked in the minds of Europeans to porcelains imported from Asia. The fascination with the Far East encompassed subject matter as well, and the scenes of Chinese figures in exotic landscapes on this vase are typical of the taste for chinoiserie in the early eighteenth century.
