King Lear
William Shakespeare|William Sharp|John Boydell|Sir Joshua Reynolds
1783 · Etching and engraving · Drawings and Prints

White hair streaming, Lear is here buffeted by the elements in act 3, scene 2 of Shakespeare's play. Engraved by Sharp after a painting by Reynolds, this print was published by Boydell, and its success encouraged him to launch the Shakespeare Gallery, an exhibition-print publishing scheme in 1789.
