Apostle plate with inscription of Saint Phillip
Unknown
ca. 1740 · Porcelain, with polychrome enamel · European Sculpture and Decorative Arts

This plate, which depicts Saint Philip, originally belonged to a set of dishes illustrating Christ’s apostles as well as John the Baptist. The Chinese potters likely used images from European prayer books as sources for the portraits. Also European in origin is the distinctive border design, although no source has yet been identified.
