鳥居一峯造 「蒼海の渦」|Swirl of Blue Water — Torii Ippō

Torii Ippō’s Swirl of Blue Water, an imposing sculpture made of contrasting dyed and undyed timber bamboo, won the Special Recognition Award (Tokusen) at the 2006 Nitten exhibition. Short vertical strips are tied on both sides to long wide strips and overlaid on either side with irregularly plaited wider pieces. The artist coiled these layered bands into complex, dramatic shapes and finished the piece with a coat of lacquer (urushi).
