This drawing by Léon Bakst shows a costume design for "a woman from the village" for the ballet 'Daphnis and Chloé'. This ballet by Fokine was first performed at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris in 1912, as part of the seasonal repertoire of the Ballets Russes. It was one of several Greek-themed performances by the company, which allowed Bakst to freely apply his predilection for exotic, slightly revealing costumes, and sets with lavish pastoral landscapes. One of Bakst’s set designs for this production can also be found in the Museum’s collection.
